Introduction
The geographical location of Riau Province is highly strategic in terms of the economic growth of the Southeast Asian region, which has developed rapidly, along with the high volume of international goods and services traffic. This has had a significant impact on the acceleration of economic growth in Riau Province, as well as advancements in civilization and technology. The region’s technological growth is also supported by Riau Province’s abundant natural resources, such as petroleum, natural gas, bauxite, tin, coal, sea sand, and plantation commodities like palm oil, cocoa, coconut, rubber, and others. These resources contribute to the development of industries, services, finance, and investment, in addition to the growing number of industries and service sectors in areas such as the Barelang region (Batam, Rempang, Galang), the Sijori region (Singapore, Johor, Riau), the Dumai Industrial Zone, the Tenayan Raya Industrial Zone, the establishment of palm oil factories, oil exploration by Chevron, and the large oil reserves in the Natuna Islands. This situation is driving the increasing application of industrial technology in Riau Province now and in the future.
Industrial technology requires highly competent human resources who are capable of competing and seizing opportunities to play roles in the industrial sector. To enhance the community’s ability to master industrial technology, the University of Riau, through the Engineering Education Development Project (EEDP) ADB Loan No.1432 INO, began constructing facilities and infrastructure for the Faculty of Engineering in mid-1996. This initiative led to the opening of a new study program: the Diploma III in Mechanical Engineering, officially established by the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 378/DIKTI/Kep/2000. Furthermore, the Bachelor's Program in Mechanical Engineering was initiated under the permit from the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education No. 4020/D/T/2007.
In response to societal demands and for self-development, the Mechanical Engineering Study Program was elevated to the Department of Mechanical Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Riau, based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 208/D/T/2009 dated February 16, 2009, and was subsequently formalized by the Rector’s Decree of the University of Riau No. 77/H19/AK/2009 dated February 26, 2009.
